Do you understand?

Updated: Apr 14

Be curious, not judgmental. Wise words from Walt Whitman as quoted by Ted Lasso. We love the quote and may immediately believe it to be how we live our lives, but do we walk the talk?

Challenge: Keep a judgment journal for a day. Carry a notebook around or keep your phone notes handy and make a note of every judgment you hear yourself making throughout the day. It may be directed toward yourself, toward others, or toward a circumstance or situation. It can be difficult to keep track of them all!

When I first tried this, I became very upset by the end of the day. It was shocking how often my inner dialogue was plagued with judgments. What did I truly understand about what I was judging? Was I seeking to understand more about myself, another, or a situation or was I allowing my mind to provide the simplest answer in the form of a judgment?

It may take a few tries to do this for an entire day, but it can really change your perspective. And I’d love to hear your thoughts and insights so that we both may come to a better understanding.

Be inspired and share joy,

Liz
