Your Compass

The National Institutes of Health define wellness as “a holistic integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, fueling the body, engaging the mind, and nurturing the spirit”. Theresa Webster dictionary says it is “the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal”. Both definitions are integrated into the Wellness Compass Initiative - a grant-funded organization established to help individuals and groups strengthen their understanding of and build their own wellness. It all starts with a compass. Our wellness compass.

A compass shows us direction; north, south, east, west, or somewhere in between. Similarly, a wellness compass consists of body, mind, heart, and soul; a holistic approach.

And like a traditional compass, the wellness compass helps us along our journey.

Within each compass point are two areas of wellness:

Body: care for body/stress resilience

Mind: vocation/organization

Heart: emotions/relationships

Soul: spirituality/rest & play

Keeping this compass in mind as we travel through our lives increases our awareness of our wellness. It can help us understand where we may need to improve our balance.
